Škoda Epiq EV Details Released, undercuts the Kamiq on Price

As we reported back in February, Škoda’s all new Epiq compact crossover arrives this year, but it’s set to go on sale July, and be priced from £24,995.

Škoda claims the new Epiq achieves price parity with its petrol-powered Kamiq, but it’s actually £540 cheaper, making it not only the most affordable fully electric Škoda model, but also Škoda’s cheapest SUV offering regardless of fuel type. It also looks considerably more modern and stylish compared to the Kamiq.

Price parity is fast becoming the goal for manufacturers to reach as we’ve seen with Vauxhall making strides with its refreshed Vauxhall Astra attaining price parity, and Vauxhall’s Combo and Vivaro range that’s priced the same as their combustion counterparts.

With the launch of the new Epiq, this is Škoda’s first foray into price parity vehicles. But long may it continue, too. It’s certainly a sign of changing times. But has Škoda done enough to convince customers into their electric-powered compact SUV?

As with the new Volkswagen ID Polo, and the Cupra Raval, the Epiq is being built on Volkswagen Group’s new MEB+ platform, which has been designed for front-wheel drive powertrains with a keen focus on efficiency.

There are two trim levels: SE L and Edition, but there will be an exclusive First Edition offered at launch featuring a comprehensive specification and a number of unique design details.

Exterior

At 4,171 mm long, 1,798 mm wide, and 1,581 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,601 mm, the Epiq fits into the B-Segment SUV class. Albeit compact on the outside, Škoda claims it has a spacious interior. And with 500 litres of storage that’s made up from a 475 litre boot and a 25 litres frunk (front trunk), the Epiq out-competes pretty much all rivals in this segment and some rivals in the class above for cargo capacity.

The Epiq wears a different face to other models in Škoda’s range with some styling elements, such as the vertical bar slatted grill - that could be inspired by Jeep - found at the bottom of the Epic’s front.
However, attention is likely to be drawn more to the large smiling face, made up from some glossy trim where a grille would normally sit and DRL’s and headlights that sit well integrated into the overall shape and style of the front, that surrounds the grille. It looks like a happy car.

The rear has styling touches that wouldn’t be out-of-place for a refreshed Volvo EX30, for example. That’s no bad thing as it adds a sense of presence, but what Škoda has achieved with the new design elements is to part ways from a familiar family face and carve out its own identity. It makes the Kamiq - the Epiq’s petrol equivalent - look very dated in comparison.

The Epiq will be offered with six paint colour options, with the solid Marble Grey and metallic Jasper Red being free. There’s also a solid Timano Green and metallic options with the Platinum White, Pebble Silver and Mystery Black.

18-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard with 20-inch wheels fitted to the First Edition trim. There will be further optional wheels to choose from between 18 to 19-inches.

Inside

The Epiq’s interior has been kept simple, but with physical buttons both on the steering wheel and dashboard underneath the 13-inch centre display, adding tactile, usable function just a press away.

There are three new interior Design Selections starting with Loft Grey, which is standard on SE L and Edition trims, that combines grey fabric and a Techtona* with grey stitching with a keen focus on comfort. All interiors are said to be made from a range of sustainable materials.

*Techtona is a durable, easy-care synthetic leather alternative.

Loft Mint, available as an option on the Edition trim, includes mint fabric and grey Techtona with mint stitching.

Suite comprises of brown artificial leather and microsuede with brown stitching.

Connectivity is core to the new Epiq offering plenty of personalisation options, online services and access to a dedicated app store. There’s also the MyŠkoda app enabling remote access to vehicle information, charging management and pre-heating or pre-cooling among other features.

Battery, Range and Performance

Two battery options and two power outputs are available with front‑wheel drive only. The MEB+ platform has been designed for efficiency meaning that the lighter car can use smaller, lighter batteries and still provide very decent range.

The Epiq 40 has a usable 37kWh capacity from lithium-ion-phosphate (LFP) chemistry, meaning a full charge to 100% is not only preferred, but the full battery range is available after each plug-in. The Epiq 40 can deliver upto 190 miles of range based on the WLTP combined test cycle, which is astonishing from a relatively small pack.

The Epiq 55 uses a larger 52kWh battery made from nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry. This higher density chemistry provides a driving range of up to 272 miles on the WLTP cycle.
For context, the Renault 4 with a 52 kWh pack achieves 249 miles of range, so Škoda is pulling out a magic rabbit from its dashboard given the differences here.

Both battery variants can charge from 10-80% in under 25 minutes at an appropriate rapid charger, which is decent, but not ground-breaking.

But the bonus here is that the Epiq supports bidirectional charging, allowing the high voltage traction battery to power small appliances, or charge batteries from eBikes, for example. It can even support households or the grid where its permitted to do so.

One-pedal driving fans get a B mode, with selectable regeneration levels available.

Safety

The Epiq comes equipped with a range of safety and driver assistance systems, including Front Assist, Side Assist, Lane Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition. Occupant safety is supported by seven airbags as standard, including a centre airbag.

Equipment

Advanced LED headlights with daytime running lights and LED rear lights are standard, but also add to the character of the car.

Wireless Smartlink integration seamlessly connects with smartphones, while rear parking sensors and climate control make up the essentials. All models also come equipped with keyless start/stop and adaptive cruise control.
