The Electric Range Rover with 372 Miles of Range and a Lofty Price Tag
It’s been a long time coming and finally Land Rover delivers on its commitment to sell an all-electric Range Rover. And that delay might be down to the extensive testing as the new car has already been driven the equivalent of 38 times around the world during testing, as well as completing 250,000 hours of virtual tests.
JLR says the new electric Range Rover has been tested more than any previous Range Rover product ensuring that it exceeds customers expectations.
the promise is, their new EV will be quieter, more responsive, and with more torque than any Range Rover to date. It has to offer a unique selling point to warrant a higher asking price compared to its internal combustion versions. But will Land Rover offer enough to tempt customers?
Performance
With two 260 kW motors there’s an effortless near‑silent surge in performance from the 550 PS powertrain and 850 Nm of torque, JLR says it delivers its performance exceptionally smoothly and efficiently.
That power and torque converts to a 0‑60mph sprint in just 4.3 seconds, which is like a Hippopotamus racing a Cheetah, and winning.
When it comes to the off-road stuff, JLR boasts “revolutionary traction management [that] responds in as little as 50 milliseconds, 100 times faster than a combustion‑engine equivalent, on any surface, ensuring no compromise to legendary Range Rover all‑terrain drive capability – including wading through up to 900mm of water.”
Despite the battery pack in lieu of an internal combustion engine, the wading depth stays the same, but the reaction to a changing surface is an order of magnitude faster.
Battery, Charging and Range
Packaging
In an unusual move, Range Rover has double‑stacked a 118.5kWh battery with 344 prismatic cells.
Given it’s quoted WLTP range of 372 miles, the efficiency indicates approximately 3.14miles per kWh
JLR has developed 800‑volt architecture for its new products to provide super-fast DC rapid charging capability, charging from 10‑80% in 22 mins at a compatible charger.
This adds 137 miles of range in just 10 mins. It might not be ground breaking compared to BYD’s FLASH Charging, but it does offer very competitive charging speed given the size of the battery.
To assist that huge battery pack, Range Rover introduces its new ThermAssist heat management technology which it developed - along with the batteries and motor - at JLR’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in the UK.
Exterior
The good news is that it’s still unmistakably a Range Rover design with the only visual clues to its powertrain being an aerodynamically‑optimised grille, although that will be hard to spot. It also has a flat underbody to maximise motorway range, and no exhaust pipes on show.
The reason for few visible signs is that this generation of Range Rover was engineered and developed from the outset to seamlessly integrate electric propulsion via flexible architecture.
Off-Roading
One‑pedal driving arrives with two purposes; to provide a relaxing drive without much need of a brake pedal, which is especially useful in traffic, and to enable an effortless climb of up to 45 degrees.
A low centre of gravity provides a sure-footed drive across any terrain and the twin‑chamber air suspension enhances both driving dynamics as well as assisting when tackling the rough stuff, which can be anything from a poorly maintained road to doing farming, albeit expensively.
JLR says “the Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) distributes rear torque from 100 per cent to zero per cent to prevent loss of traction, and Integrated Traction Management (ITM) which controls motor speed within 50 milliseconds and manages slip up to 100 times quicker than an ICE vehicle equivalent.
Integrated Traction Management works in concert with the new Single Pedal mode, providing owners exceptional control to smoothly pull away up to 33‑degrees with ease – a slope as steep as a black‑diamond ski run – or complete a rolling climb ascend up to 45‑degree slopes.”
Prices and Trims
Range Rover curiously refers to the launch vehicle as the “Curated First Edition” which is available only in a luxurious specification and with a choice of colours from Belgravia Green, Santorini Black or Varesine Blue. It also states that it is introducing Light Cloud UltrafabricsTM PU and KvadratTM interior, although I don’t know what that means.
However, for all that luxury, the new Range Rover Electric is available to order now, and is priced from £157,610 OTR in the UK. That gets you the ‘Curated First Edition’, but other trims are available to order.
For customers looking for something more special than the ‘Curated First Edition’, they can call on the Range Rover Bespoke commissioning service for a choice of near‑limitless paint colours and finishes, enhanced materials, tailored colour combinations and personalisation details including unique embroidery. It will come at a hefty price, though.
For those looking for more value, the Range Rover Electric can be ordered in a choice of short or long‑wheelbase body designs (the battery pack size stays the same) in SE, HSE and Autobiography specifications, as well as SV, SV Ultra and SV Black.
There’s no starting price yet for the standard wheelbase SE electric version, but where the diesel variant starts from £110,525, expect the electric version to cost much more.
For now, the least expensive option available at launch is the Electric Autobiography at just £154,070, and at the other end of the scale, the Range Rover Electric SV Black costs £190,320! Opt for the long wheel base and that price rockets to £225,240 for no additional battery capacity.

The Range Rover Electric’s advanced propulsion comes with an eight‑year or 100,000‑mile warranty.
