BYD Launches Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging
BYD is known for making both cars and near indestructible LFP batteries, yet it has a relentless pursuit to bring charging speeds down to match the experience of refuelling a petrol or diesel car.
In the latest iteration, BYD claims to have breakthrough technology achieving a 10%-97% recharge in just nine minutes thanks to peak charging rates of a whopping 1.5 MW with compatible chargers.
BYD also claims that when the temperature gets as low as -30deg, the FLASH Charger can take a Blade Battery 2.0 from 20% to 97% in just 12 minutes. Quite remarkable.
Not only that, but BYD states their Blade 2.0 battery is 5% more energy dense than the outgoing blade battery, so it should enable longer journey’s with shorter fuel stops, very similar to the experience of a petrol car.
BYD aims to roll out 20,000 1.5 MW chargers in China this year alone, and already has thousands in place.
BYD Solar Storage Charging Integrated System
BYD calls this super-fast rapid charging FLASH charging following six years of extensive research and development.
To achieve this BYD’s “Blade Battery 2.0 features a breakthrough Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) layer, a key component of any lithium-ion battery. BYD's solution uses molecular-level engineering and macroscopic structural optimisation to be both ultra-thin, allowing higher ionic conductivity, and highly dense, ensuring chemical stability. It also features dynamic self-repairing technology to strike the balance of 'thin yet strong'“
The unique selling point of BYD Blade batteries is that they pass the ‘nail penetration’ test without thermal runaway, meaning if the battery pack was punctured, there will be no smoke, fire or thermal runaway even during recharging, which is another breakthrough.
BYD seemingly sells the safest batteries using Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry (LFP).
The BYD DENZA Z9GT will be the first car to use the new Blade Battery 2.0 with FLASH Charging technology. The Denza will be the flagship shooting-brake Grand Tourer and BYD’s premium brand, similar to Toyota and their Lexus premium brand.

And the good news is that BYD has committed to make its FLASH Charging Stations available globally, although there’s no confirmed date set yet.
