Volvo launches a pair of leggy Plug-in Hybrids

The XC60 and XC90 SUV’s both receive a significant upgrade to their plug-in hybrid models with larger battery packs providing 124 miles and 99 miles of range respectively (both up from 42 miles) in electric only mode.

Both cars offer more than two and a half times more range as on the outgoing plug-in hybrid variants. Volvo has achieved this with new larger-capacity, floor-integrated batteries and a more powerful electric motor.

However, there is no news yet on battery capacity and charge times.

Håkan Samuelsson, President & CEO at Volvo Cars says “The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey. Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment. This means a path to full electrification for every customer.”

Volvo XC60 Updates

The front and rear designs of the XC60 get an update with more dynamic look from an upgraded grille and redesigned front bumper, bonnet, front wings to new wheels. It all provides a new direction for Volvo Cars’ Scandinavian design language.

The Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights gets a new look whilst the design of the tailgate, rear LED lamps and rear bumper have been updated with a more bold approach to the horizontal lines. 

Inside, customers will find a new dashboard and door panel design with wood decor and Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather that is alleged to “create a calm, Scandinavian-inspired cabin, with top-of-the-line interior illumination adding a sophisticated ambience”.

The XC60 now gets the latest active safety technology with predictive collision detection, reacting in real time whilst warning the driver or stepping in to help avoid or reduce an impact. The system can access the steering and braking to help avoid incidents, such as alerting occupants of an approaching cyclist before a door is opened, or steering away from a surprise obstacle.

To assist with this, Volvo has upgraded the sensor suite including radars, cameras and other sensors. Features such as lane change assist and a 360 camera with 3D view help drivers see much more when manoeuvring.

Google Gemini, and its next-generation AI assistant is available allowing drivers to interact with the car using natural language. Drivers can plan journeys, find great stops and even it can manage messages on the move.
