The Volkswagen ID.3 gets the coveted GTi treatment

Fifty years after Volkswagen launched the first ever GTi, the all-electric ID.3 receives the coveted GTi treatment for the first time.

The new ID.3 GTI is also the most powerful of all GTI models ever built with 326 PS and 545 Nm of torque all sent to the rear axle pushing the car forward like a true rear-wheel drive sports car. 0-62 mph takes just 5.6 seconds marking it out as a true hot hatch.

For a while, the GTX filled the gap for providing an all-electric hot hatch, but since the launch of the ID.3 Neo, that hasn’t not been available in electric form. Now, Volkswagen is intent on adding its GTi spice to the ID.Polo and ID.3, with perhaps more planned in future as it aims to give its customers exactly what they want.

Being a GTi, Launch Control is standard which ensures that acceleration can be transferred to the road without leaving two black lines on the Tarmac. However, there is one piece of bad news for the Autobahn fans because this new GTI is electronically limited to a top speed of 124 mph.

But, this new sports car comes with the DCC sports chassis plus its naturally low centre of gravity - thanks to that low mounted battery pack - creates a “new, pure and dynamic GTI experience”, according to Volkswagen.

Battery, Range and Charging

The ID.3 GTi gets the same 79 kWh (net) lithium-ion battery as found in many electric Volkswagen Group cars now.

DC rapid charging is rated at 183 kW and the ID.3 GTi can be charged from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes, which is about average, although in reality this is enough time to complete a comfort and nourishment break at the services.

More impressively all that performance doesn’t equate to a measly range, as the new ID.3 GTi is good for 373 miles on the WLTP test cycle.

Vehicle-to-load function is standard, although the PowerSocket to run it is optional. V2L can be used for charging devices, e-bike batteries or running small appliances and powertools.

Exterior Design

Volkswagen has paid close attention to ensure this is unmistakenly a GTi. Based on the ID.3 Neo it carries the GTi insignia, plus it gets new standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights and a transparent light strip with the illuminated VW logo stretches between them. Above that are more GTI features, such as the red stripe (derived from the red radiator grille frame of the very first Golf GTI way back in 1976) and the LED elements are integrated in the bumper are solely for the GTI.

The high-gloss black honeycomb air intake grille –a signature GTI feature – makes its way to the ID.3 GTi, too, as well as the front splitter, all a nod to its motorsport heritage.

New 20-inch Wörthersee alloy wheels are fitted as standard, plus the side mirrors are painted in gloss black.
As a departure from the ID.3 GTX4, the GTi does away with the black roof, black roof spoiler and black boot lid, and are now finished in the vehicle colour. This makes the car look longer and lower thanks to the body-painted roof section which now has the illusion of a longer and sportier appearance.

Interior Design

The interior has not just been redesigned and revamped with the Neo version, but the GTi now has an elevated quality interior, too.

There’s a new, larger Digital Cockpit and a 12.9 inch, centrally mounted touchscreen display with Volkwagen’s new ‘Innovision’ infotainment system

Button fans will welcome the button strip for the air conditioning functions and hazard warning light switch that’s located under the infotainment display. There’s also a volume control knob that skips tracks and radio stations. Plus the steering wheel has physical button, replacing the old haptics that did not win over customers hearts and minds.

Superclark Premium Sports Seats

The GTi Superclark pattern, hugging premium sports seats - that symbolises the GTi on the inside - come as standard, although the massage and memory function for them are an option.

Other options include a 480-Watt Harman Kardon sound system, augmented-reality head-up display and removable bracket for attaching a bicycle carrier.

To add an element of drama Volkswagen has added an illuminated GTI button on the multi-function sports steering wheel at the six o’clock position. This activates the driving profile, equipped as standard, GTi mode is activated. Volkswagen claims this activates the dynamic ‘secret sauce’ of GTi as all drive and chassis parameters are set to maximum sportiness. Power delivery is at max and the progressive steering and the adaptive DCC sports chassis are sharpened up, plus Launch Control is activated.

At the same time, the accent lighting changes to red. The power display and speedo change to dominate the centre of the digital instrument display, and a faux combustion engine can be heard in the background.

Colours

The classic GTi colours are silver, black, red and white, all of which are available for the ID.3 GTi called Tornado red solid, Moonstone grey solid, Scale silver metallic, Grenadilla black metallic and Glacier white metallic.

Tornado red was offered for the facelifted version of the first-generation Golf GTI over four decades ago and is now considered to be ‘the’ quintessential GTI colour. This option remains unchanged for the new GTi.

Availability

Pre-sales of the ID.3 GTI in Germany will start at the beginning of 2027 with the U.K. expected to follow some time after that.
