Kia EV2 - Small on the Outside, Big on the Inside
If ‘The Doctor’ drove a car, it might be the Kia EV2 with it’s physics defying spacious interior formed from a compact B-segment SUV.
At just 4 meters in length, Kia has launched into a market short on small hatchbacks, but as I alluded to in an earlier article, tough competition is on its way for this sector, so what does Kia offer that will set it apart from other brands?
For a start, Kia says the EV2 is designed, engineered, built and sold in Europe meaning no import duty and more likely, it should qualify for the EV Car Grant, albeit that has yet to be confirmed. Hopefully, this will keep prices down.
With a striking design, this little Kia punches above its weight with technology and safety at its core and plenty of space to offer inside.
The rear bench can slide to create more or less boot space, or more or less rear legroom. And Kia states that the EV2 can accommodate 400 litres of luggage regardless. This is significant because there are cars from a segment above that do not have that much storage in the boot.
In fact, there’s so much room inside that Kia confidently claims the EV2 can act as a primary car for families.
For that, it needs to offer battery choice and fast charging speeds, and Kia doesn’t disappoint because it can be optioned with the 42.2 kWh battery for 197 miles of range, or the much larger 61 kWh for 281 miles of range. This has yet to be validated on the WLTP test cycle, so numbers may vary slightly at launch.
Charging the car at an appropriate DC Rapid Charger will take 29-30 minutes as it sits on 400v architecture. This is about average, and no where near as quick as its larger - and undoubtedly - more expensive 800v siblings.
For AC charging, the Kia EV2 can support up to 22 kW, which is good if you have a three-phase supply at home, but Kia assures us there are many 22 kW AC chargers on the continent so this will add to its appeal.
Pablo Martínez Masip, Vice President Product, Brand & Customer Experience at Kia Europe says “Our B-segment, electric SUV delivers charging capabilities, connectivity, and ADAS functionality typically associated with higher segments. With both 11kW and 22kW AC charging, integrated EV Route Planner, and OTA updates, the EV2 reflects how customers expect their cars to function as part of an entire digital ecosystem.”
Inside the EV2 has Kia’s latest triple-screen connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) system, with a 12.3-inch driver display, a 12.3-inch central touchscreen, and 5.3-inch climate control display, which may disappoint some who prefer tactile buttons and dials for their climate control.
But the pay-off is regular Over-the-Air software updates that will keep the Kia fresh as it ages.
One of the EV2’s core features is safety and the EV2 has a suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) typically found in higher segments. It includes Highway Driving Assist 2, Front Collision Avoidance Assist 2.0, Smart Cruise Control 2, Remote Smart Parking Assist Entry, Blind-spot View Monitor, and Surround View Monitor.
There is also in-cabin monitoring to ensure the driver doesn’t fall asleep at the wheel or isn’t distracted by some of the three displays. But it goes deeper by monitoring the occupants to ensure the car can react appropriately in a collision offering the best protection for everyone.
Being European born and bred, suspension and damping have been tuned accordingly resulting in controlled mannerisms, so Kia claims.
Steering has been prioritised to provide feedback and with electronic Stability Control (ESC) and a Snow Mode contributes to safer low- and high-speed manoeuvres.
And because Kia are targeting this as a primary family car, they worked hard at Noise, Harshness and Vibrations (NVH) to reflect the kind of experience associated with larger vehicles.
This will include acoustic insulation throughout, and acoustic glass.
Production of the EV2 has started at its factory in Slovakia with the entry-level EV2 on the 42.2kWh standard-range battery version.
The 61.0kWh long-range and ‘GT-Line’ variants are scheduled for production from June 2026.
UK pricing and specifications will be announced in due course.
