Chery International Could Manufacturer Cars at Nissan’s Sunderland Plant
We brought news in May that Nissan was closing a production line at its Sunderland plant, whilst retaining its workforce. At the time Nissan stated that it will optimise remaining production lines, merging them into one that will produce the all-new Leaf, Juke and Qashqai models on one line, with the Micra already being built at Renault’s factory in Douai, France.
Now that spare production capacity looks set to go to Chery International with an agreement that Nissan will make both Nissan and Chery brands under one roof.
At this stage Nissan and Chery International UK have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to study a potential contract manufacturing process.
The Sunderland facility would remain fully owned by Nissan using Nissan’s employees with the aim to start manufacturing Chery International UK passenger vehicles as early as 2027.
Massimiliano Messina, Chairperson Nissan AMIEO, said: “This is an important step forward for our operations.
“We are looking forward to working with Chery International UK in the coming months to finalise a position that is optimal for both companies.”
The MoU is non-binding, and discussions are ongoing between the two companies, with no further details to be made public at this stage.
