MG Launches Two Versions of the MG 4

MG now offers two versions of the MG 4; a refreshed MG 4 that has become a familiar sight on our roads, and an all-new MG 4 Urban which is a different car entirely.

In a bid to move the refreshed MG 4 up market a notch, MG has brought out a lower priced, budget focused version.

The 2026 MG 4

The MG 4, when launched in 2022, has become a popular choice, but now at it’s mid-life point it’s had an extensive refresh.

There’s only three trim levels to choose from; the Premium Long Range, Premium Extended Range and XPOWER trims, starting from £29,995 for the Premium Long Range, which is about the same as an entry level Volkswagen Golf. Price parity has arrived folks.

The Long Range battery receives the familiar 64 kWh pack delivering 280 miles of range (WLTP) combined with a fairly decent 190 hp. 0-60 time is good for 7.5 seconds from the rear mounted, rear-wheel drive single motor.
And charging from 10-80% on a compatible rapid charger takes just 25 minutes.

The Premium Extended Range has the same 77 kWh battery pack as before and can complete 338 miles of range on a single charge. The rear-mounted motor produces a rather perky 244 hp that can push the car to 60 mph in an athletic 6.2 seconds.
The achilles heel of the Extended Range is charging speeds, though, taking the battery pack from 10-80% state of charge in a rather uncompetitive 40 minutes.

MG 4 Premium

But it’s the XPOWER that should excite enthusiastic drivers. With two electric motors (making this AWD), it delivers a whopping 435 hp propelling the XPOWER from standstill to 60 mph in a facelifting 3.8 seconds.
Prices for this version start from £33,995 representing great value for money when comparing it to the Volkswagen Golf R, for example.

All models feature new alloy wheel designs and a new rear spoiler blending more seamlessly with the MG’s profile.

MG 4 Premium

There have been bigger updates inside the car with new materials and ambient lighting for a more premium feel. MG also promises big technology updates and new comfort features borrowed from the MG S5 and MG S6.

There’s a new 10.25-inch driver’s display with content being customised by the new, larger 12.8-inch HD central touchscreen. Updates to the user interface should make features and functions easier to find at a glance.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the range along with MG’s Pilot ADAS system.

The MG 4 Urban

Surprisingly, MG has gone with an all new car for the Urban built on MG’s new E3 front-wheel drive platform.

The Comfort Standard Range starts from £23,495, with the Comfort Long Range priced at £25,495, and the Urban Premium Long Range (not to be confused with the MG 4 Premium Long Range) priced at £27,995.

The MG 4 Urban excels on space and comfort with 997 mm of leg room up front and a very decent 957 mm of legroom in the rear.
The boot can also take 479 litres of luggage when measured from the floor to the ceiling. And under the boot floor is another useful 98 litres of space - thanks to the absence of that rear mounted motor - making this a very practical family car.

MG 4 Urban

Like its sister car, the MG 4 Urban has a two screen set-up, albeit the main display is a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen and the drivers display comes in at 7-inches.
MG’s iSmart connectivity is standard and there is wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard equipment, too.

There are online apps available such as Tik Tok, YouTube, Spotify and Amazon Music, which will be useful when stopping for a charge at the motorway services.

There are physical controls for air conditioning and media functions, and an enhanced MG Pilot ADAS system also features.

MG 4 Urban Interior

Battery options for the MG 4 Urban start with a 43 kWh pack for the Comfort Standard Range. The Long Range Comfort and Long Range Premium receive the 54 kWh battery pack boasting of 258 miles of range on the WLTP test cycle.
But importantly, all MG 4 Urban’s are fitted with a heat pump as standard providing more cold-weather range.
The Premium trim gets 360º panoramic parking cameras.

Charging from 10-80% takes just 28 minutes from an appropriate rapid charger, which is enough time to catch up on an episode of DNAG via the onboard YouTube app.

In summary, both the MG 4 Urban and MG 4 offer an interesting choice with price points starting from £23,495 for the Comfort Standard Range Urban all the way up to £33,995 for the crazy fast XPOWER.
However, both versions of the MG 4 come with a 7-year/80,000 mile warranty for peace of mind.

Having two different bodies for a car with the same name might be confusing at first, but MG will appeal to a broader customer base with more choices available.

With the legacy MG 4 discontinued in China, replaced by the softer looking MG 4 Urban, might it mean that MG is warming us up gently to the idea that the sharp lines that we have come to love will be gradually phased out? Time will tell. But for now, MG is taking no chances.
