The New CX-5 Launches and Mazda has its Eye on Sustainable Fuel
The all-new Mazda CX-5 launches powered by Mazda’s e-Skyactiv G mild-hybrid engine that’s already compliant for 100% sustainable fuels.
Mazda has specified its new 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G 141ps petrol engine with SUSTAIN Fuel Technologies. SUSTAIN 100 95 RON E10 biofuel is manufactured from biomass such as food and agricultural waste plus other non-food by-products.
The philosophy is by using the carbon that already exists in our atmosphere from plant matter - which absorbs CO2 for their fuel to grow - Mazda claims its recycling CO2 rather than adding to it. The issue is finding somewhere to fill up with 100% bio-fuel.
Needless to say, customers will worry less about this and just pump normal E10 petrol into their cars. For now bio-fuel compliant cars are a nice gesture with some future proofing for whatever blend of ethanol is mandated for petroleum gasoline in the years ahead. And this Mazda will have no issues using it needing no modifications.
Suresh Nahar, Brand Manager for SUSTAIN, said: “we are delighted to be partnering with Mazda to fuel the launch of its all-new CX-5 with 100 per cent sustainable fuel. Set against Scotland’s stunning scenery and marking an exciting new era for this iconic model, using a fuel with no fossil fuel content highlights the many benefits we can unlock through advanced technology. What better place to showcase the vital role sustainable fuels can play in building a brighter future for the ICE and fuel security.”
SUSTAIN claims that Mazda can deliver “a greenhouse gas saving of over 80 per cent during the drive, when compared to a fossil fuel [whilst using its 100% bio-fuel]”.
However, SUSTAIN said that this fuel is currently not available commercially, but they do offer fuels for the public that are available with varying levels of sustainable content.
The new CX-5 produces 141 PS and 238 Nm of torque taking the Mazda from 0-62mph in 10.5 seconds. It’s not designed to impress as the stats suggest, but Mazda has a keen laser-like focus on extracting pure fuel efficiency from their internal combustion engines, with technology such as cylinder de-activation.
The front-wheel drive versions achieve 40.4 mpg under WLTP test conditions with the all-wheel drive CX-5 managing 37.7 - 38.2 mpg. Given the current high fuel prices, and the shift of over 50% of new car sales to electrification to cut bills, this may not sit well with customers that feel the pinch at the pumps. It seems Mazda is not offering the type of future proofing that sparks customers interests (pun intended).
There’s a six-model line-up with front or all-wheel drive and a standard automatic gearbox. The four trims are Prime-Line, Centre-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Homura
Inside, features a new 12.9-inch centre display that can be optioned with a larger 15.6-inch unit and has customisable menus. This also includes Google built-in1 making every day driving easier.
A 10.25-inch drivers display provides essential information is delivered clearly. Top spec Exclusive Line and Homura trims also include a 12-speaker Bose® sound system.
Key features include a new centre console with enhanced storage, with the Exclusive-Line and Homura trims getting a panoramic sunroof. These trims also include ambient lighting that stretches to the front door trims.
The boot has additional 61 litres of space over the outgoing model providing up to 583 litres of storage with the seats up and a huge 2,015 litres with the seats folded down.
The rear doors now have a wider-opening that helps getting young ones and the elderly in and out of the car.
All models feature wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus front and rear parking sensors and a reverse camera. The Exclusive-Line, and Homura trims also get a 360 degree camera. However, its stand-out feature is the glorious metallic red paint that Mazda uses - there’s nothing quite like it.
Prices for the all-new Mazda CX-5 start from £31,550 rising to £40,950 for the top-spec versions.
