Smart Previews its ForTwo Replacement with a Concept Sketch
As we reported back in February, 2026 will be the year that manufacturers launch their small EVs with Smart launching perhaps the smallest and latest EV to arrive this year.
Smart’s first car after relaunching the brand was called the #1 which represented the first car following their brand relaunch, and not the first - and smallest - car in their line-up. The honour of the smallest car is reserved for the #2 which is a fortwo replacement.
The Smart fortwo was made available as an electric car, along with the forfour, but it was purely designed as an urban runabout, and it nailed that market making motoring inexpensive with a twinge of fun factor thrown in for good measure.
But the fortwo is getting on a bit now and modern city cars feature a whole raft of technology that simply doesn’t exist in the current fortwo architecture, so Smart has addressed this by developing their new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA).
Smart says “the two-seater Concept #2 provides an exciting outlook on the reinvention of an urban icon with the upcoming smart #2.”
Smart aims to preserve the essence of the outgoing two-seater, so the Smart #2 carries the legacy of the much loved smart fortwo. Its exterior design carries the a similar shape and style, but modernised to reflect Smart’s current design direction, complimented with all-new underpinnings.
The #2 will keep the fortwo’s two-door, two-seat configuration, with rear-wheel drive confirmed as well, plus it keeps its compact footprint and wheels-at-the-corners stance.
Smart will give the #2 a completely redesigned interior and a refreshed identity. The new platform will provide next-generation, advanced safety systems, and an all-new urban driving experience with engineers currently focused on driving dynamics by refining ride and handling at its Chinese proving grounds.
Test teams are also currently verifying structural strength, brake system performance, suspension durability, battery performance, software systems and climate control systems across various conditions in multiple countries whilst preparing the #2 for series production.
The all-electric smart #2 will make its world premiere in late 2026.
