Nissan Delivers its 100,000th Electric Car in the U.K.
Ever since Nissan launched its all-electric LEAF back in 2011, there has been a steady and growing interest for cars powered solely by electricity. And with over 2.1 million EVs finding homes on U.K. roads since those very early days, Nissan as delivered its 100,000th electric vehicle in the U.K.
The all-new Nissan Micra, in bright red paintwork collected by the Ainsworth’s, hit that milestone just as the Mk3 LEAF rolls off the production line in Sunderland, with the handover by Chorley Nissan to the couple’s first electric car.
Mrs Ainsworth said: ‘‘We are delighted with our new MICRA. It’s our first electric vehicle and we love everything about it. It drives beautifully, it’s comfortable and spacious, and it looks great. We were attracted to the MICRA partly because of the positive reviews we read and we’ve not been disappointed. Many congratulations to Nissan on selling their 100,000th electric vehicle in the UK.’’
Nissan recently launched the all-new MICRA earlier this year, and was tested at DNAG. Built in France on the same production line as the Renault 5, similarities between the two are obvious, despite its different face and rear.
However, the all-electric Micra may not have existed if it wasn’t for their pioneering forefather with the first generation Nissan LEAF; the world’s first, mass produced, family-focused electric car.
Other manufacturers followed, and over the decade several EVs came to market. But it wasn’t until the turn of this decade that has seen a surge in new EVs launching almost weekly.
With initiatives like the EV Car Grant and ZEV Mandate, coupled with uncertainty and volatility around petrol and diesel costs by an ongoing conflict in the Middle East, EV sales are currently booming, according to the SMMT.
