MG Metro Turbo Returns as the GO! Concept

Despite being owned by SAIC of China, MG has over 100 years of British heritage to draw from when introducing new cars, and it hasn’t disappointed with the MG GO! concept that debuted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The MG GO! concept car is a new B-segment electric hatchback - blending both retro and modernism - with a launch date some time in 2027. MG says they have taken inspiration from the legendary MGB GT and applied modern design and technology with the aim to provide the new small hatchback with a British Identity, in a similar way to BMW’s MINI hatchback.

Unlike the MINI, the GO! doesn’t lean into British nostalgia in the same way. It isn’t creating a new MGB GT, or Metro Turbo, but it does reimagine MG in a modern era with the design reflecting a back catalogue of heritage. And what makes this stand out is it has its own unique, modern identity, and is a bit of a head turner. It’s designed simply to tug at those heart strings.

With large front wheel arch bulges, and blistered arches at the rear, along with a conceal rear door handle, this MG GO! has some rally car inspiration from the coveted MG Metro 6R4 blending into a more fluid and dynamic design. And this could hint at a hot version of the GO! on the horizon.

In fact, MG referencing the sporting heritage of the MGB GT, MG Metro Turbo, MG ZR and MG EX4 when discussing the design direction. It wants to inspire an emotional attachment to their new small hatchback.

Carl Gotham, Design Director of Advanced Design, London said "With MG GO!, we wanted to create something compact and contemporary, but also warm, expressive and immediately likeable, an embodiment of all that we admire about the MG brand. It is not about looking back for its own sake, but about capturing some of the clarity, charm and emotional appeal that have always made MG so distinctive, and reinterpreting that in a way that feels relevant today and crucially creating something with strong charisma.
