MG announce new semi-solid state battery
Today in Frankfurt, Germany MG announced its new solid state battery technology, called the ‘SolidCore Battery’.
This announcement was part of the company’s inaugural Tech Day for 2026, where MG spoke about its new upcoming MG Hybrid+ tech and a new European engineer centre in Germany.
MG expects its new SolidCore batteries to go into production by the end of 2026 and it’ll be used in an updated version of the recently launched MG4 Urban. As of writing in March 2026, the details about energy density are a bit scarce, but more information will be released in due course. Production of the batteries has already started in China
MG has highlighted some main benefits of using semi-solid state batteries, such as 15% faster charging in low temperatures than LFP and 20% quicker response for power.
The MG4 Urban (known as just MG4 in China) with a semi-solid state battery is already available in China, although pricing is a bit different, with the LFP version costing 70,000 yuan £7,500 and the solid state version costing 100,000 yuan about £11,000.
MG is due to launch the solid-state battery version of the MG4 Urban later this year. Prices are to be confirmed.
