Isuzu Does an Electric D-Max
Isuzu, famed for its commercial vehicles and occasional passenger car (if your memory stretches back as far as mine), has launched a right-hand drive version of its D-Max EV pick-Up truck, featuring permanent all-wheel drive.
The initial specs aren’t ground-breaking, and some may say disappointing, as the D-Max EV is fitted with a 66.9 kWh battery pack with dual motors - one on each axle - with power rated at 202 hp and 347 Nm of torque. This provides for a range of 163 miles on the WLTP combined test cycle. Take it on the motorway and it will cover considerably less range.
And motorway use is where this truck is let down as DC rapid charging is rated at only 50 kW, meaning the D-Max will take one hour to charge from 20% - 80% putting a big dent in someone’s work day. AC charging tops out at 11 kW. And there’s no bi-directional charging, so using power tools isn’t an option from the truck, nor can power tool batteries be recharged.
The market for this D-Max is perhaps defined by its limitations in range and rapid charging, but this may suit some use cases perfectly, specifically those that don’t wonder far from their work site.
Sprinting from 0-60 mph is done in a reasonable 10.1 seconds, with top speed limited to 80 mph.
Isuzu says “a new De-Dion semi-independent suspension system improves handling and ensures a more refined ride, contributing to a reduction in cabin noise and vibration under full acceleration by up to 10%”.
However, there are a few goodies to report as the D-Max EV features a ‘Rough Terrain Mode’ for off-road capability. It has a ground clearance of 210 mm, and can wade through water up to 600 mm, which is impressively deep without a snorkel.
Approach and departure angles are 30.5 degrees and 24.2 degrees respectively.
The D-MAx is also available in Extended Cab and Double Cab version, with two trims called eDL40 and eV-Cross.
There’s leather/high-grade cloth interiors with ‘Rough Terrain Mode’, dual-zone climate control, heated seats, front and rear parking sensors, Bi-LED headlights and a 7-inch driver information display as standard equipment. eV-Cross versions get an 8-inch drivers display, 9-inch central display (instead of 8-inch) and 8-speakers instead of 6 speakers.
Both the eDL40 and eV-Cross come in Splash White as standard with a palette of optional colours; Mercury Silver, Onyx Black, Mountain Grey, Biarritz Blue and Dolomite (Pearl) White.
Managing Director of Isuzu UK, Alan Able, said: “The New Isuzu D-Max EV arrives in the UK, and for the first time in its segment provides the option of a fully electric pick-up with class-leading commercial capabilities. The new electric vehicle assures the reliability, comfort and versatility of the D-Max while supporting commercial operators aiming towards decarbonisation. This is an exciting moment for both Isuzu UK and hardworking commercial and fleet operations in many environments: The New Isuzu D-Max EV combines the work-ready toughness, durability and presence expected of the Isuzu D-Max with a zero emissions electric vehicle for the first time.”
