Hyundai’s New IONIQ 3 is a Bit of a Head Turner

The new IONIQ 3 is a fully electric compact hatchback that stretches the B segment class to its limits at 4,155 mm in length. But that additional length adds a class leading 441 litre boot, if including the sub-trunk area that Hyundai refers to as its Megabox.

Introducing its new “Aero Hatch” shape, Hyundai has optimised the IONIQ 3 for both aerodynamic efficiency and interior space. Coupled with a 2,683 mm wheelbase, there is plenty of space in the rear, both in legroom and headroom and also in the boot.

Xavier Martinet, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe. says “with IONIQ 3, we are bringing the bold design, driving enjoyment and advanced features of the IONIQ brand to a broader range of customers across Europe. Built for people's real everyday needs, IONIQ 3 combines an expected segment-leading driving range and aerodynamics with extraordinary levels of space, comfort and practicality.
IONIQ 3 also marks the debut of the Pleos Connect infotainment system, delivering sharp graphics, an intuitive user experience and broad customisation options – raising the bar for the segment”.

Built on Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the IONIQ 3 has 400-volt architecture, with DC rapid charging from 10 to 80 per cent taking approximately 29 minutes. AC charging is rated up to 22 kW for those fortunate enough to have a 3-phase supply.

There are two battery options; a 42.2 kWh standard range with 214 miles of WLTP range, and a Long Range version with a 61 kWh battery and a class-leading range of 308 miles, which is outstanding for a B-segment hatchback.

Performance is perfectly acceptable for a small car with the Standard Range accelerating to 60 mph in 9 seconds from a 147 PS motor, with the Long Range taking 9.6 seconds with an oddly less powerful 135 PS motor. Both versions offer a very respectful 250 NM of torque, though.

Hyundai introduced the Pleos Connect infotainment system - based on Android Automotive OS (AAOS) - with 12.9-inch or 14.6-inch central display for accessing vehicle functions, navigation and connectivity.

There’s also a new Digital Key 2 enabling keyless access via smartphone or wearable devices. Plug & Charge also features and is integrated into the EV route planner making charging easier and smoother than filling up a tank of petrol.

Despite being on 400v architecture, the IONIQ 3 also accommodates Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) to power external devices, batteries, power tools and much more,

The IONIQ 3 can be opted with any of the eleven exterior colours available, plus there will be multiple interior schemes, and alloy wheel sizes ranging from 16-inches to 19-inches (including N Line variants).
The additional IONIQ 3 N Line has sporty design elements and exclusive N-Line touches to set it apart from the other variants in the line-up.

Seats can be both heated and ventilated, but are made with some recycled and bio-based materials. Other premium features, available on some trim levels, are a BOSE® Premium Sound System, dual-zone climate control and ambient lighting, all adding a touch of luxury mixed with sustainability.

SmartSense advanced driver assistance systems are available in the IONIQ 3 which Hyundai says is aimed to “reduce driver workload”. This comprises of Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA2), Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA), Memory Reverse Assist (MRA), Surround View Monitor (SVM) and Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM). There are also seven airbags as standard to protect all occupants should the worse happen.

An exact launch date is yet to be confirmed along with pricing and specs, but it’s expected to be available sometime in 2026.

The IONIQ 3 will come with a Five-Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty, five years of roadside assistance, and five years of vehicle health checks, providing customers with added peace of mind. Best get those miles in since mileage is unrestricted.
