BYD Launches a Super-Hybrid Supermini
BYD have only been selling cars in the U.K. for three years, but have already launched an extensive line-up of plug-in hybrids and battery electric cars. And now they’re busy launching small cars from their Dolphin range, starting with the BYD Dolphin compact crossover that launched back in 2024 with a 60.5 kWh LFP Blade battery, to the fantastic BYD Dolphin Surf city car that was launched last year.
But now, BYD are adding to the Dolphin range with the Dolphin G DM-i supermini to take on the likes of the Vauxhall Corsa, Volkswagen Polo and Peugeot 208, and - in a twist - this is the U.K.’s first plug-in hybrid supermini.
Sitting in between the Dolphin Surf city car and Dolphin compact crossover, the ambition for the Dolphin G is to target customers who are looking for a compact car that has low running costs, combined with zero-emissions ability of an EV (perfect for towns and cities), but is also capable of long-distance travelling, with up to 1,000 km of combined range (or 621 miles) available.
At 4.1 meters long, its approximately the same size as the new Renault Clio, so it sits perfectly within the B-segment class with a unique plug-in hybrid selling point.
Details are scarce, but BYD says the Dolphin G DM-i will go on sale across European markets in the coming weeks, with the first deliveries expected to reach customers by the end of the summer.
