BYD Claims Best Electric Vehicle Seller in the U.K.

BYD has claimed the U.K.’s best-selling electric vehicle (EV) crown as it overtakes Tesla, KIA, BMW and Volkswagen, with 12,754 electric vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2026.

Private buyers are BYD’s largest consumer of electric vehicles, despite having zero electric cars in their line-up that qualifies for the electric car grant.

BYD also claims its plug-in DM-i hybrid (Dual Mode intelligent) sales are strong, and with the two powertrains combined - that BYD refers to as ‘New Energy Vehicles’ - 26,396 units have been sold in Q1 2026, taking a 9.5% UK market share.

Bono Ge, Country Manager, BYD UK, said: “With fuel prices remaining high, more drivers are turning to electric vehicles as a smarter and more economical choice. We are delighted to see the UK EV market grow by 22% year-on-year, and even more proud that BYD has become the UK’s leading EV brand in a little over three years”.
