BMWs Neue Klasse Offers Free Charging to Customers in Germany with New Wallbox

With BMW now in full swing launching a raft of its Neue Klasse cars, complete with a new design direction, BMW will also offer a superior charging experience with “Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) accessible to all [Neue Klasse] customers.“

Bi-Directional Charging

In partnership with E.ON and their V2G tariffs, and mated to the all new BMW Wallbox Professional, all Neue Klasse vehicles will be capable of bi-directional charging with automatic charging and discharging controlled by a BMW and E.ON developed algorithm.
The headline numbers are that it enables customers no-cost charging for up to 14,000 km per year whilst helping to stabilize the grid by lowering energy demands and costs.

The BMW app has been redesigned to ensure customers can quickly access their charging status ensuring they have control so they never leave without the requested charge.

Initially being offered in Germany, with the focus on reducing costs for customers, it could really incentivise the uptake of electric cars when the free fuel carrot is dangled as a significant cost advantage.

Solution for Existing BMWs/MINIs

But not content with that, BMW Group will offer a solution for all BMW/MINI EV customers, by charging their cars via a new Wallbox Plus, in exchange for reduced charging costs from a selection of different energy providers including E.ON.

There’s no word yet on expansion outside of Germany, but these solutions offer a serious incentive to shift from internal combustion cars to a new electric BMW or MINI.

Customers outside of Germany will undoubtedly be interested in seeing similar schemes launching in their domestic markets, so it’s something that BMW will hopefully assess for a potential wider rollout at a later date.

In the U.K., where the introduction of eVED, or Pay Per Mile may put some off from switching to an electric car for fear of incurring additional costs, this would be a welcome incentive.
