Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 gains Larger Batteries and More Power plus Other Updates

Volkswagen has updated the batteries, motors, onboard chargers and more in the ID.4 and ID.5 with more capacity, improved range and more power, but it comes with a small price increase.

ID.4

The 52 kWh battery in the Pure Essential and Match trims has been replaced with a 58 kWh battery improving WLTP range from 222 miles to 265 miles. Power has increased by 20 PS to 190 PS, but there is no additional cost added.

For the Pro Essential, Match and Black Edition a new 79 kWh battery replaces the outgoing 77 kWh battery. It’s a small increase in capacity that doesn’t improve the 347 miles of range and the power stays the same at 286 PS, but prices increase by £570 thanks to a raft of other updates mentioned below.

For the all-wheel drive ID.4’s with Pro Match 4MOTION and Pro Black Edition 4MOTION trims, the new 79 kWh battery improves range from 325 miles to 341 miles and power is up from 286 PS to 299 PS. Prices increase by £570.

The ID.4 GTX 4MOTION gets the same 79 kWh battery and a modest increase in range by 4 miles to 326 miles on the WLTP test cycle, but power remains the same at 340 PS. However, the price has increased by £655.

ID.5

The ID.5 Pure Match replaces the 52 kWh battery with the new 58 kWh battery with power up from 170 PS to 190 PS, but range increases significantly from 227 miles to 272 miles for no additional cost.

ID.5 Pro Essential, Match and Black Edition trims see battery capacity increasing from 77 kWh to 79 kWh with power staying the same at 286 PS and a modest increase in range from 344 miles to 351 miles. Prices increase by £570.

The ID.5 GTX 4MOTION sees a range improvement from 327 miles to 331 miles with the battery increasing to 77 kWh, but power remains the same at 340 PS.

Bi-Directional Charging

But the biggest improvement comes with the addition of Vehicle-to-Load, or bi-directional charging, turning the car into a large power source for plugging in power tools, recharging larger battery packs from e-bikes for example, or plugging in appliances, like a coffee machine, or fridge freezer during a power cut.

Other Updates

To keep the ID.4 and ID.5 fresh and in-line with new models launching later this year, such as the ID Cross and ID.3 NEO, Volkswagen has updated the cabin to feature more physical buttons following customer feedback of their dislike for haptic controls.

Traffic Assist with Front Cross is standard to safeguard pedestrians and cyclists, plus there’s an improved infotainment system and driver attention monitoring system, plus faster inductive phone charging, albeit still limited to 15 Watts.

As an optional extra, the heat pump is now more efficient for improved winter range and, for ID.4 Pro 4MOTION variants only, the trailer load limit has increased from 1,200 kg to 1,800 kg.

Pure Essential trims now get the larger 19-inch steel wheels, and the Pure Match trim has a standard fit electric tailgate plus an additional 230-volt power socket is available as an option.

Prices for the ID.4 and ID.5 start from £36,995 OTR, but because of the changes made to the powertrain, Volkswagen must now re-apply for these models to be eligible for the Government’s Electric Car Grant.
