New Smart #2 Snapped Testing

Sweeeeeet, should be the first thought when you see the tiny Smart #2 because it’s tiny, cute and - given its size - it looks like it can be bear hugged. At less than 3 meters in length, the Smart ForTwo replacement defines micromobility.

Currently undergoing rigorous testing around the world ahead of its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show this October, we have already had a sneak peak at what the new#2 will look like following the concept models revealed earlier in the year at Auto Beijing 2026.

Pictured below in black-and-white camouflage, the new Smart has been styled by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, but it really shows off its diminutive size out on a road in its natural habitat.

Smart is also targeting a WLTP range of 185 miles, which is a significant step-up vs the outgoing FourTwo which was rated at around 81-84 miles.

Along with a significant battery upgrade, the Smart #2 will have DC rapid charging as well, with a target charge of 10% - 80% taking under 20 minutes. Smart will also introduce Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) which can be used to power devices, or power directly from the cars high voltage battery.

There’s no information on battery capacity or chemistry yet.

Smart said it had been testing “at dedicated proving grounds, [where] the vehicle’s agility was tested against a wide range of real-world urban challenges, including unexpected obstacles, emergency lane changes and low-grip wet road conditions. Continuous refinement of the chassis hard points, steering ratio and rack travel as well as suspension movement control ensures the vehicle remains composed, responsive and agile in everyday city driving”.

Smart also wishes to ensure that drivers, and its sole passenger, will have an elevated cabin experience, with reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) that’s transmitted into the cabin. This will also include a wind tunnel test, as well as testing the new #2 in an acoustic chamber. Testing will also be completed in a temperature-controlled four-post rig, as well as both driving around a proving grounds and on public roads, providing engineers with the feedback required to make modifications and adjustments.

The concept on display earlier in the year in China had added featured such as mock bumper straps and white tyres and wheels which are unlikely to make it into production.
