BMW’s New i3 Preparing For Launch

The BMW i3 was the first mass produced electric car from BMW, launching in 2013 the radically designed and built small hatchback with its quirky styling, grew a fan base when it finally went out of production in 2022.

But now BMW is about to launch it’s all new i3, and it’s not a mk2 of the original small hatchback that proved extremely popular. Some may be disappointed to hear that.
However, BMW is returning to it’s badge format with the new i3 being the electric version of the new 3 Series.

The All New BMW i3 in Pre-Production

Formally, the only option in this class from BMW was held by the i4 which was more of a four-door coupe than a conventional saloon car commanding a premium price.
But the new i3, the second car to launch on BMWs Neue Klasse design, promises to deliver so much just as the new iX3 has done at launch late last year.

Built in BMW’s Munich factory, BMW claims that it’s “using state-of-the-art manufacturing technology and digitally connected processes” with the i3 being built entirely in Munich.

Although there’s no official stats yet, if the iX3 is anything to go by, the new i3 should offer a class-leading range thanks in part to excellent efficiency and BMW’s 6th generation battery pack mated to 800v architecture.

Expect over 400 miles of WLTP range, and possibly as much at 500 miles if a similar battery pack - fitted to the iX3 - finds its way into the i3. This would be a game changer for fleet buyers especially if 250 miles of range can be added in 10 minutes via an ultra-rapid charger. More about the UK’s rapid charger expansion here.

The All-New BMW i3 in the Munich Factory

Series production will start in the second half of 2026 and going on sale shortly after, the i3 will be built on BMW’s bespoke EV platform, despite looking near identical to the all new 3 series when it launches. This should ensure the i3 is optimised for the electric powertrain.
